It has been decided a one-time Energy price flat rate of 200 Euros as part of the third relief package for all students (not just those who receive BAföG) on December first in the Bundestag. However, payments are not expected before March 2023.
The EPP will be paid to

  • part-time students
  • students in dual, part-time or distance learning programs
  • foreign students
  • those who are currently taking a semester off
  • and doctoral students.
  • Even if you are studying abroad temporarily but are enrolled at a German university, you will receive the allowance.

The only people who are excluded are those who are only enrolled as a guest student at a German university and those who are studying completely abroad and are tthus not enrolled in Germany.

Once an application platform has been set up, you have time until September 30th, 2023 to submit your application. Until then, it's a matter of waiting...

Increase child benefit for the first and second child by €18/month from January 2023.

The limit has risen again since 1 January 2023, to €2,000. As a result, you as an employee in this wage range will have to pay (in part) significantly less social security contributions.

It is intended to ensure that electricity costs will fall in total. It caps 80% of the electricity consumption for private consumers at 40 cents per kilowatt hour. The electricity consumption is based on historical consumption - usually that of the previous year. Only for the remaining consumption above this level the regular market price must be paid.

The electricity price brake has been in effect since the beginning of this year, but the payment of the relief amount does not take place until March 2023. This happens automatically - either via the statement from your energy supplier or via the operating costs statement from your landlord. You do not need to do anything else.

In general, there have been improvements in BAföG since the autumn semester 22/23The allowances on parental income are increasing by 20.75 %, the need rates by 5.75 %. In addition, there is an increase in the age limit to 45 and in the asset allowance to 15,000 € (for all under 30) or 45,000 € from the age of 30. The Bundestag decided in October last year the second heating cost subsidy/Heizkostenzuschlag. Students who no longer live with their parents are entitled to the heating subsidy. However, they are only eligible if they receive BAföG for at least one month between September 2022 and December 2022 (whilst not living with their parents). BAföG recipients will then receive a one-time payment of 345 euros from the BAföG office.

The few students who receive housing subsidies/Wohngeld also receive the one-time subsidy in the amount of 415€ from their housing subsidy office.
The plan was for the second subsidy to be paid by the end of 2022, but according to the German Association of Cities/Deutscher Städtetag, payment is not expected until the end of January/beginning of February (source: https://www.mdr.de/brisant/heizkostenzuschuss-auszahlung-wann-226.html))
